OCAI contiene información sobre los productos rechazados en los puertos de entrada a los Estados Unidos, recopilada por la Food and Drug Administration (FDA), agencia encargada de la inspección de las importaciones de alimentos (con la excepción de la mayoría de carnes y aves), cosméticos, medicinas, aparatos médicos y productos electrónicos que emiten radiación. Estos productos pueden ser rechazados en frontera por una variedad de razones que tienen que ver con la salubridad e higiene de los mismos y el cumplimiento de estándares y regulaciones vigentes en Estados Unidos.
La CEPAL quisiera también compartir un estudio realizado con base en la información compilada en OCAI, titulado: "Estimating the effects of United States food safety and agricultural health standards on agro-food exports from Latin America and the Caribbean". El estudio usa el número de rechazos en la frontera de Estados Unidos como una aproximación a los costos comerciales asociados con estádares y regulaciones relativos al comercio internacional de alimentos.
